Interview Tips for Registered Nurses
When interviewing for a registered nurseing position, you want to present yourself in the best possible light to make a good impression. To help you do that, we have put together a few tips for your interview.
Dress Professionally
As you know, your appearance will count. Make sure you are dressed well and your outfit is appropriate for an interview. Make sure your shoes are shined and match your clothes. Your clothes should be pressed and your hair neat. It is also best to be conservative with jewelry and fragrances.
Practice Communication Skills
In a nursing career, a good part of your time is spent working with patients. Because of this, the interviewer will want to evaluate your communication skills and demeanor. Be sure to make eye contact with your interviewer throughout the interview, especially when describing your training and accomplishments. Listen carefully to questions and speak clearly with confidence. Shake hands solidly, before and after interview.
Do Your Homework
It is always a good idea to do a little research about the facility you are applying to and the nursing position you are applying for. Let the interviewer know that you have taken the time to become familiar with the company and their needs.
Market Yourself
Since the interviewer has probably reviewed numerous applications and resumes prior to yours, do not expect them to remember you or your accomplishments. During the interview, describe yourself and your nursing successes in a positive, clear and concise manner. Present examples of how your experiences and skills would fit the nursing job you are applying for.
Ask Questions
Take opportunities during your interview to ask questions about the facility and its culture as well as the position you are applying for to ensure a good match. Questions highlight your interest in both the position and facility. Ask about the challenges faced in a typical day and what kind of registered nurses are excelling in the company.
Just remember that an interview is the first impression to a potential employer. You may experience more than one interview for the position desired. If so, each interview must be perceived as important as the first. Your resume, as well as the post-interview follow up, will also leave an impression. Contact them after a few days and thank them for the opportunity of the interview and let them know you are still interested in the desired position. This will not be the only nursing interview you will ever receive. If you work hard to make a good impression and ask questions, you will increase your chances of getting a registered nursing job that's right for you.
